Before Dale Carnegie wrote How to Win Friends and Influence People he did an extensive public speaking workshop for many years. He found through this workshop all the techniques and all the details and strategies that he later wrote and How to Win Friends and Influence People.
That’s what makes this such a remarkable book. That it was based on first-hand experimental experience. It’s a commonly accepted idea that public speaking will increase confidence.
If you want to increase your confidence in all areas then taking any kind of public speaking class will get you there. Another way that’s much more powerful to not only increase your confidence but to increase your emotional flexibility is taking an acting class.
Acting class will help you to become more emotionally outgoing. More emotionally flexible. It will give you much more emotional range in your communication.
Emotional Intelligence Development
The thing that will happen when you do that is you’ll become much more emotionally intelligent. If you can express your own emotions with a lot more flexibility and feelings of comfort and safety you can read the emotions of other people.
This will make you much more attractive to a lot of people. There are a lot of professions that you wouldn’t really expect that study acting for that reason. Trial attorneys study acting. People that give sales presentations study acting. Any time or you can benefit from being more emotionally open and expressive you will benefit from studying acting.
Another even deeper and more profound benefit from studying acting as all the different people that you meet. When you go to an acting class you’ll meet people that are specifically doing things to stretch your comfort zone and if you meet people that are doing things to specifically stretch your comfort zone you will meet a lot of interesting people.
Who Is That Guy?
When she saw this guy come into the classroom the first time she became very very interested in him. She wanted to find out his story and so they went to lunch after the class ended one Saturday afternoon.
She started listening to his story. He used to have a job as an engineer. He had a wife he had three kids and he would volunteer about twice a month down at the local soup kitchen. Then one night this guy came up, homeless guy, said he wanted him to help him take this piece of furniture that he found on the street back to where he stayed every night.
They took this big sofa back to where he stayed every night. He asked him to stay for little bit and so he sat down in this big reclining soft sofa while the guy talked to him. The longer the guy talked to the more he felt comfortable exactly where he was.
The longer he talked to him the less he wanted to go home. The more he wanted to stay. Eventually he decided to stay the night and then he decided to say the next night and the next night he was there with that homeless guy for three months until the homeless guy finally released.
Scrambled Brain Pattern
When he was released, his brain was so scrambled he could barely remember how to get back to the soup kitchen. The reason he was taking acting class was to help him rediscover his deep emotions because that’s where we keep a lot of our memories.
Because this guy’s mind and memory had been purposely scrambled he had to go digging into his emotions to find out who he really was. It turns out the guy wasn’t really homeless he was a clinical psychiatrist.
His ultimate goal was to be able to reverse the thought patterns that create homelessness. In order to reverse the thought patterns that create homelessness he had to understand the thought patterns that created homelessness. In order to understand the thought patterns that create homelessness he had to be able to create the thought patterns that created homelessness.
Stuck In Stage One
That was the first portion of this research. To purposely create homelessness in normal upstanding citizens. So far he had been able to install these homeless thought patterns in many many people but he had yet to discover how to reverse them.
The more he told her the story the more she started to really really feel terrible for what happened. She made it her personal mission to help this guy.
She started doing research to find out where he came from and as far as she could tell he had never been married. He didn’t have any children. He never had a job. But he seemed like he used to be an upstanding citizen.
Where Does He REALLY Come From?
She became obsessed with this guy’s story and the more she tried to track down his origin story the more she herself lost track of her own origin story. Pretty soon she couldn’t remember who she was. She couldn’t remember where she came from. All of this information got lost deep down in the depths of her emotions all swirled together somehow created by those confusing thought patterns that seems to be virally transmitted from one human to another.
It might just be that by listening to this story these thought patterns are going into your own mind. You might want to be careful so that you don’t forget who you are.
