Air Conditioning Repair
The other day my air-conditioning broken side of my apartment. I had to call some guy to come fix it. He showed up about 10:30 and he told me that it would take about an hour to figure out what the problem was and that it would take another hour to fix the problem depending on what it was.
Because it was already 10:30 and was already starting to get warm outside I decided I didn’t want to sit there and wait for him to fix it so I took a walk and I ended up down my local park.
As I approached I saw this guy standing in the middle just talking to himself. At first I thought he was some kind of crazy homeless lunatic type person but as I got closer I started to listen to what he was saying and it sounded like he was practicing some kind of a speech.
Rambling Lunatic?
As I got closer I kind of made eye contact with him and he made eye contact with me. It was clear that he didn’t mind me kind of eavesdropping on his practice session so I sat down on a nearby bench.
It turned out that he was practicing his magicians patter. If you’re a magician and you want to do tricks on stage it’s a lot more easier to convince people of your magic skills if you can tell interesting stories.
While you’re telling interesting stories people’s attention will be fixated on your stories. This can allow you a lot more freedom of movement when you’re doing sleight-of-hand and so he was practicing that part of his magic.
He was actually going through the same hand motions that he would normally go through with his sleight-of-hand. He would practice the hand movements along with his stories because it seems that the stories he was telling use a lot of hand gestures in the stories and those same hand gestures he could use with his sleight-of-hand magic.
Goat Trick
It reminded me of this one really really famous guy back in the day who is famous for making a goat magically appear on stage. If you know the trick it seemed very very obvious and was no longer interesting but if he didn’t know the trick if you didn’t know it was coming in would be a fantastic experience.
What he would do what he would have to stage completely black. He would walk out on the stage wearing a big black hat, a black suit and a huge black cape. He would have this white glove he would hold up above his head and as he walked out on the stage, everybody would focus on the white glove and he actually had a goat under his black cape.
Because everybody was focusing on the one thing that he wanted everybody to be focused on they didn’t see him just set the goat down. When the goat was set down and goat was there people didn’t see until it was already there.
Incorrect Memory Assumption
That’s the secret to magic. As you do something while people are not watching so people see the outcome of the magic after it has happened and then their confirmation bias their hindsight bias will click in. They’ll hallucinate some kind of fantastic magic they’ll remember having seen.
It turns out this guy was doing a lot deeper magic than I had realized. He told me that his angle, his thing that he was trying to do was to be able to tell such powerfully hypnotic magician’s patter that the people watching him would remember him actually having done magic tricks without him actually having done magic tricks.
That was the whole purpose of his magicians patter. To implant the ideas in people’s minds. To implant the false memories in people’s minds that he had actually done real magic tricks. He asked me if I wanted to watch his thing from start to finish. He told me that it would take only 20 minutes from start to finish.
What Happened To The Time?
The funny thing was I was sitting in the park for at least two hours and I had experienced at least six iterations of this magicians patter from start to finish but every time he started a new set of stories I completely had forgotten how they turned out. I had completely forgotten the middle parts I’d completely forgotten the ending parts.
I had this weird combination of thoughts in my mind, this weird combination of thoughts that was both I don’t know what’s happening I wonder what’s going to happen next. I remember this this is pretty cool it turns out that these two thoughts are kind of like opposite thought patterns.
When you hold the opposite thought patterns in your brain it leaves an open space to implant false memories and the funny thing was is the next thing I knew I was sitting at home.
How Did I Get Home?
I don’t remember going home. It was 5 o’clock, 5:30, I just noticed that I was sitting at home my air conditioner was on it was very cool in my apartment I didn’t really remember how I got there. The only similar experience I’ve ever had before was when you drink to much and you wake up the next morning and you spend the next, the first few minutes of wondering what happened. Try to remember the previous night. That’s how I felt except I didn’t do any drugs I didn’t drink anything.
I wandered around my apartment I found the invoice to air-conditioning guy left. I saw my signature I signed it at 4:47. There was an imprint of my credit card and I sat there and I try to remember the guy in the park.
I couldn’t remember. I thought, I was pretty certain that he did some kind of tricks on a unicycle. I thought maybe he did some juggling tricks. Part of me thinks he did some kind of balloon animal tricks with a bunch of kids watching him and their mom standing behind the kids watching them.
Flame Thrower?
Part of me thinks he might’ve been doing some of that flame throwing with this mouth type tricks. I’m not really entirely sure if I even went to the park in the first place.
