Boy Scout Skills
When I was younger I did a lot of rockclimbing. I learned first in Boy Scouts and then when I was in high school I had a coworker at the pizza place that I worked at was a very good rock climber so he would take me rockclimbing on the weekend sometimes.
My first job after college I worked with a colleague who was another skilled rock climber and he would take me rockclimbing on the weekends. Most of the time when you go rockclimbing you drive up early in the morning you do a couple of climbs and then you drive back that night.
Sometimes when you go rockclimbing it makes more sense to drive up the night before, wake up very, early climb all day and either drive home that night for stay the night again and drive home the next morning.
Outside Alcohol Party
When you start to go camping you find there’s two distinct categories of camping types. Their are two types of people that you meet while doing these two different camping types. The first kind of camping is car camping and because car camping has a very low barrier entry anybody can do it.
All you really need to do is have a car, have a tent or sleeping bag, throw a bunch of stuff in the car, you can pretty much decide on a whim to go car camping. This means if you go car camping you have the potential to have some very loud neighbors.
What tends to happen is when people are sitting outside they tend to be louder than they are when they’re sitting inside especially if they’re sitting around the campfire and drinking alcohol. You can potentially have some very loud nights if you go car camping.
The next class of camping is backpacking. When you go backpacking you have to go hiking for an extended amount of time so the people you tend to meet while backpacking tend to be a completely different class of people that are usually much better shape.
Serious Sports Enthusiasts
They’re usually much more dedicated to the sport because backpacking requires a lot of expensive equipment. The kind of people you meet while backpacking are the kind of people that plan a couple of trips per hear, way way ahead of time, not the kind of people the plan to go car camping on a whim.
One night after meeting up with another group, myself into my hiking buddies and another three hiking buddies were sitting around the campfire we decided to spend the next two days hiking together before we split and went our separate ways, one of the guys in your group was a retired Ranger.
He told us a particularly troubling story that he found out after his years of working for the National Park service. That is that there is a group of people that have lived in the Sierras for the last 10 or 15 years. Long ago this group had decided to completely leave civilization behind and they decided to tap back into their ancient hunter gatherer roots.
Modern Day Hunter-Gatherers
Most physiologists will tell us that our mind-body systems are essentially the same as they were back were hunter gatherers because hunter gatherers stopped being hunter gatherers only about 10,000 years ago. This is not nearly enough time for evolution to have caught up.
We still have the same instincts that we had as when we were hunter gatherers and one of the things that most people don’t know about hunter gatherers is that most hunter gatherers were cannibals.
This makes perfect sense if you’re a group of hunters going out looking for something to kill so you can eat because you don’t eat you’re going to die. If you see another group of hunters, another rival tribe it’s really do or die. Whoever gets to the animal first is going to live whoever gets to the animal second is going to die.
Quite often these two tribes would fight each other and the winning tribe would kill the losing tribe and instead of going hunting they’d just take the losing tribe home and eat them. This is exactly what chimps do in the in the wild.
Genetic People Eaters
There’s even genetic evidence that shows that humans all humans were cannibals before they invented farming. This group of people went to the Sierras to live naturally reverted back to their cannibal ways.
What they would do is, they don’t actually look for people to kill and eat them. They would much rather kill bears and dear because it’s a lot safer but when they can’t find their bears and dear, they see a lone hiker they just kill that hiker and eat him.
If you’re a single hiker or if you’re with a group and you get lost and you go missing, the Park service is not going to spend a lot of money looking for you. Unless your family is very very wealthy, chances are if you go missing in the Sierras your body will never be found.
It turns out there’s over 200 people that have gone missing in the Sierras over the past 10 or 15 years.
Eaters Of The Lost
This Ranger was telling us, this retired Ranger was telling us that there’s a very high likelihood that these missing people were actually hunted and killed by this group of cannibals that currently live in the Sierra Mountains.
After we went our separate ways we went to our destination and they to their destination but if you ever make a decision to go backpacking, it is a very fantastic way to really really get away.
Car camping is kind of a good way to get away but you’re still reminded that you you have civilization. If you go car camping it’s a good idea to check the management of the area where you can make sure they have a very strict no noise rule.
A Dingo Ate Your Baby
One of the places that we would go on extended camping nights is Joshua Tree for rockclimbing. Most rockclimbing excursions are to this gigantic rock and the rock has several different climbs on there. So each one of these individual climbs is going to take the entire day.
Joshua Tree has these big piles of boulders all over the place and so instead of spending all day in one climb, you do one climb for like an hour and then you hike to another climb, do that for now and because that can take the whole day it’s a good idea to drive out there the night before wake up early too much of climbs and then drive home maybe the third day.
Going to Joshua tree for rockclimbing is like a three-day trip but Joshua tree is a special place because it has its own unique set of problems. It’s a great place to camping but also seems to attract a lot of weirdos.
Watch Out For Alien Abductions
At night the sky is really bright because of all the stars and because of all the big piles of boulders everywhere kind of looks like an alien landscape.
It seems to attract a very fringe group of people people like Satanists and devil worshipers and alchemists and serial killers but also attracts Boy Scouts and other nice people so if you’re going to go to Joshua tree make sure that you take care to choose your site carefully.
