Renting Skis
A couple of months ago I was going skiing and so I had to go rent a pair of skis. I have been skiing ever since I was a kid or at least I learned how to ski when I was a kid and I’m been skiing off and on since I was a kid but I never bought my own skis.
I went to the sporting goods store. A very very large sporting goods store. There was a huge line of people waiting to rent winter sports equipment. I took my number and I was wandering around the sporting goods store and they have this very cool diving pool. You can go downstairs and have a window that you can look through and see people inside the diving pool.
When I went down there, there was three people learning how to scuba dive. There was one instructor teaching the students. When I was watching the instructor looked at me and waved. It kind of surprised me because I didn’t think I knew anybody that worked at the sporting goods store, but I could tell it was a female from the eyes. I could tell when she waved at me she smiled from her eyes but I didn’t recognize her.
Who Are You
I went back upstairs and I got my skis. I saw her. She came up to me and I recognized her as a girl that I knew from around town. I know her name she knows my name. I don’t really remember where we met in. She seemed to be finishing up work and so I asked her if she wanted to have a cup of coffee.
We went to get a cup of coffee. I asked her about scuba diving. I didn’t know that she was a scuba instructor. She said she was excited because she just got her teaching certificate. She just got her license to be able to teach other people how to become scuba divers. This is an internationally recognized license which means she can go work anywhere and teach people how to scuba dive.
I asked her why she decided to do that. She said because she went on a vacation with her friends and the guy that taught them how to scuba dive told them about his story when he first got his license when he lived in Europe. He lived there this lake that was surrounded by a lot of a very old mythology.
Hidden Treasure Beneath
One of the reasons he wanted to get his scuba license because ever since he was a kid he wanted to go diving in this lake. Explore for himself to see if any of this mythology was true. So when he got his license he geared up you want to dislike and he went by himself which is very very bad thing to do if you’re a scuba diver.
You’re always supposed to go in pairs in case something happens, but he was too excited and he was kind of still had this childlike idea that he might find some treasure that he wanted to keep for himself. He was diving underwater and he started to hallucinate. While he was hallucinating he knew he was hallucinating because he was going to deep too quickly.
He was excited so he was hyperventilating and he hadn’t quite figured out how to make sure the oxygen mix was fine-tuned for his body. Pretty soon he started seeing people underwater. He was still realizing that he was hallucinating. Then the people started to motioned for him to follow them and one in particular was a very attractive woman.
Not A Mermaid
She didn’t look like a mermaid. She didn’t have a tail. She didn’t have any gills. He just followed her. It seemed that natural and safe to follow her and she let him through a very long tunnel. It was about 2 m wide. He had light that shone around him in a sphere of about 2 m or a meter and a half so was just barely enough to see the walls of the tunnel.
He was swimming through and on the other side of this long tunnel was a an enormous undersea city about a kilometer across. A big circle a big dome and was lit by these underwater natural lights. There were these people that were there living there and they all welcomed him. The woman that led him through the tunnel started to motion for him to take off his scuba equipment.
Normally this would have been terrifying, but for some reason, because this was still a hallucination, he figured it was safe and so he took his scuba gear off. He took his breathing apparatus off. He felt normal underwater without feeling the need to breathe and he lived in this undersea city with these people for a week. He felt completely safe. He felt completely comfortable. He didn’t need to eat. He didn’t need to breathe.
Time To Leave
After about a week he figured it was time to go. He suited up his scuba equipment. He put his breathing apparatus back in and he swam back out this long tunnel. When he finally surfaced at the top of the lake he checked his air tank and he was maybe a quarter left. He figured he had this fantastic hallucination. At the same time he was happy that he had that hallucination because it was so cool.
He was also very aware that it was a very very dangerous thing to do. To go scuba diving by himself. He could have just as well drowned and nobody would’ve known. When he remembered this hallucination, he remembered it like a very very vivid dream after you wake up. When you wake up you still realize that it’s a dream, but it seems kind of vivid, and the longer you go after you wake up, the more it turns into the dreamlike memories instead of a vivid realistic memory.
He drove home. He was debating whether or not to tell his roommates what happened, because he knew that they would yell at him for going scuba diving by himself. When he got home, they were absolutely surprised. They asked where have you been? We’ve been looking for you for a week! The police have been looking for you! They’ve even gone to the lake and they looked for your body!
Huh. I Have Been Gone
He studied the papers, he read the newspapers and he found that there was indeed a story about him going missing. He called the cops, they made him go to the hospital. They questioned him about what happened but he felt an obligation to protect these undersea people. He said he didn’t remember what happened and they kind of questioned him for a couple weeks, a lot of tests.
They thought maybe he passed out in the water and was floating around for week, but he didn’t show any signs of exposure. After a couple months, they just forgot about this. This really inspired his creativity because then he started researching about all the ideas about undersea life, underwater life under lake life. He found out that what exists beneath the surface of the water is something that humans have never really understood.
There’s a lot of stuff underneath this that no one understands. So he spent the rest of his life looking for deeper meaning underneath what we can see. Trying to find the deeper meaning within these ideas. He spent this time teaching scuba diving because as you can teach scuba diving, he can search and teach and make money and live at the same time.
Search Learn Teach Earn
It’s the most efficient way to continue his search for underwater meaning. Deeper meaning deeper understandings that few people know. He wanted to become a professional scuba diver so that he could find deeper truths. So that he could find things that no one else can see. So that he can find things that you have to go looking for.
Sp that he can find things that aren’t obvious. So that he can find things that are mysterious and wonderful and will make you feel like you’re having hallucination because they seem so unreal. The whole time we were having this conversation, she kept dropping hints saying that she was soon going to leave town to become an international scuba diving instructor.
It’s always strange when people say things like this. You can assume one thing but it also means something else. While she was telling me this I kept assuming it was because she was giving me subtle hints that she didn’t want a relationship because she was leaving town.
What Did She Mean Really?
But then when I got home I asked myself what if she meant the opposite what if she meant that I’m leaving town soon so if you want to take advantage of this opportunity you’d better take advantage of this opportunity right now. I was too passive I was too uncertain I was too safe.
I wanted to make sure. It was like I was waiting for an obvious hint from her what to do. As I get older when I go skiing it’s much different than when I was a kid. When I was a kid I was very very fearless. My friends and I would find the highest mountain the steepest mountain and go down the front without really even knowing what was going to happen.
As I get older I’m much more likely to play it safe and just have it’s nice safe proven slide down the hill. Sometimes I get on a hill that’s too steep and it gets too scary for me so I have to go back to the top and go down a much less steeper hill.
