No Show Client
The other day I went to meet a client at a bar, but as soon as I walked into the bar the client texted me and said she couldn’t make it. I was expecting to eat lunch with this client I went ahead and ate lunch anyway.
After I left I was walking home when I saw my neighbor and her friend. They were walking to the library to see a famous storyteller. They asked if I would go with them to watch this famous storyteller at the library.
I went with them to the library to listen to this famous storyteller. We walked inside and she was sitting in the front. A bunch of kids and some non-kids were sitting around her. She went and sat down near the front and then she sat down to the back.
Not Sure How Long
I stood in the back as I wasn’t sure how long I wanted to stay and listen to the storyteller.
She started by saying once upon a time way back before there were kings and queens when they were only families and farms. There was a small farming community with about 100 people mostly moms and dads and kids. They all worked on this big farm that they all kind of collectively owned.
The only problem was in the forest there was a monster and every year at the end of the harvest the monster would come out of the forest and demand a portion of the harvest. If the monster wasn’t satisfied with the portion of the harvest that they offered to the monster the monster would start eating children.
Uncertain Monster Origins
This lasted for a long time and nobody really could remember when they had this agreement with this monster or when this agreement started or where the monster even came from. But one year the crop was particularly bad they were having a lot of trouble they kept getting attacked by locusts and it didn’t rain.
They were terrified that at the end of the season the monster would come he wouldn’t be satisfied and he would start to eat the children. They worried for a long time about what to do about how to deal with this monster.
Finally they decided to go and talk to the witch because the witch was the only one that they thought could deal with the monster. They finally voted who would go and talk to the witch. The person who went to talk to the witch was very very scared of the witch because they knew the witch existed but no one had really talk to her.
Lived In A Tree Trunk
The witch lived deep in the forest inside of a gigantic tree trunk. Finally the guy went and talked to the witch and he explained the problem to the witch. The witch listened patiently and said okay I’ll deal with the monster but as soon as I deal with the monster you have to deal with me.
The guy said what does that mean? You’re going to eat our children and she said I promise I won’t eat your children once I deal with the monster you will have to deal with me. He agreed on behalf of the townspeople and he went back and he told the townspeople.
That year the crop failed as expected but the monster never showed up and neither did the which. But every once in a while the witch would come into town and demand stuff from the various townspeople. That witch became the first queen of the village.
First Kings and Queens
Her children became the first kings and queens of that town and as the town grew the witch’s family became the leaders of that society.
That was the end of the story. As I was walking home with this woman and her daughter asked that was kind of a strange story to listen to in the library.
She said I looked up that storyteller when I heard she was coming to the library apparently she gets a grant from the national endowment of the arts and so she doesn’t really have to worry about satisfying her customers and I thought that’s a kind of an odd story.
Sketchy Background
She said she was researching the woman coming to the library before she let her daughter listen to the woman coming to the library and there’s a lot of people that believe this woman uses a very special kind of hypnosis to slowly and carefully brainwash the children of the country over time as she goes round of the library telling the stories.
I thought that was particularly troubling. That night I went to sleep wondering if I had been brainwashed and I kept having dreams of witches and monsters coming to collect their portion of my productivity.
