Getting Ready For Winter
The idea of squirrels collecting nuts for the winter is a structure than you can find everywhere.
Inmates tend to hoard food in their cell, as it feels good to have a secret stash of energy if you ever need this.
Preppers also store months of food in case of any widespread catastrophe that could cut off food availability from local grocery stores.
Strategic Oil Reserves
Most countries have strategic petroleum reserves.
Generally speaking, the larger the economy, and particularly the military, the more of these strategic reserves are.
These can for war or other situations when buying oil from other countries is not possible or desirable.
Energy = Power
Ever since the dawn of time, whoever controlled the flow of energy had the most power over others.
The first large agricultural societies that stored grain was the first time in human history when energy, in the form of grain, was used as stored wealth.
Simply by having a means of storing wealth led to many new power structures and different hierarchical levels, from the rulers, to the priests, to the peasants.
Hierarchical Monkey People
All societies have a hierarchical structure to them.
The higher up one is in any society, the more access to energy one has.
In primitive hunter gatherer societies, whoever was the best hunter was the person who was most skilled in acquiring energy in the form of calories.
When agriculture was invented, the more land you owned, the more calorie energy you could produce, and the more power you had.
Energy = Power
But those who controlled the flow of this energy had more power than those who created the energy.
In the days of agricultural tributary states, those that were able to acquire and store the most wealth in the form of grain had the most power.
The political leaders controlled the soldiers.
The soldiers largely used coercion to dominate the producers of energy.
The More Things Change…
Today is no different.
The energy in modern society is oil and other fossil fuels.
Those that control the flow of energy have much more power, due to their military strength, than those who produce the energy.
The battle over who gets to control the flow of energy is essentially the battle over who gets to control society.
No Grain = No Power
Ancient societies that didn’t produce any storable grain, or storable energy, didn’t develop the multi-level power structures.
Ancient civilizations centered around non-grain production, like potatoes and squash, tended not the power structures of tributary, grain producing societies.
One of the critical mistakes the Japanese made at the start of World War II was not to follow through on their planned attack of the American oil storage tanks.
Japanese Imports
Currently, Japan uses about four and a half million barrels of oil a day, but nearly all of it is imported.
This means that Japan is utterly dependent on oil imports for their energy needs, which is why they have so many nuclear reactors.
If you happen to see a bear in the fall, you’d better run.
Bears Eating Humans
Bears suddenly become much more dangerous in the fall.
Since winter is now coming, the bears switch into energy consumption mode, to prepare for their long winter hibernation.
If you see a bear during the spring or summer, you have an opportunity to take a picture.
But if you see a bear in the fall, you have an opportunity to get eaten.
