Dude Out Of Place
There is a coffee shop that I go to regularly, a couple of times a month. There is one person that works there that doesn’t quite fit the type of person you would expect to be working at a coffee shop.
You would expect to see people that are younger, that are okay with working part-time jobs. You might expect to see people that are a little bit older, kind of retired age. You’d expect to see people that are maybe students who’re recently graduated people that are kind of easing into a full-time job.
But this guy doesn’t fit at all. He’s very tall, he’s very attractive, he takes care of his body, he looks like he could either be some type of male model or he looks like he would be more suited for working in some kind of an office as a high-powered CEO. Maybe some kind of an ad executive or maybe somebody like Don Draper.
What’s Your Story, Man?
I’ve always wondered what this guy is doing working in a coffee shop and wanted to ask him, but I didn’t want it to seem like I was trying to pick them up. Like, “what’s a guy like you doing in a place like this,” and so I waited until it was just him and me in the shop and a kind of nervously broached the subject.
He kind of smiled and said yes, I totally get why you’re asking that question and explained that he was actually a day trader. That he spent a couple of hours every morning trading stocks and he made a lot of money as a day trader but he knew from his own self-awareness that if he stayed home making money it might not end well for him.
He very much needed some kind of externally created structure to keep him outside. He was afraid if he just stayed at home and a traded and made a lot of money and started ordering everything online he might turn into some kind of introverted creature that was afraid to go outside.
Need The Structure
He very much liked the idea of an external structure. A schedule that he had to go and keep. That in a job that he had to work at and follow a certain set of rules. He particularly liked the fact that he would talk to strangers on a daily basis and usually in a very pleasant way.
I asked him how he became a day trader and that was a very interesting story. He used to have a job that more suited to what you would expect a guy that looked like this to have. He was a very high-powered marketing executive. He kind of hit the fast track straight out of college.
All of his colleagues, his bosses, they all kind of knew he was going places. But the longer he worked there the more he absolutely hated it. He hated the daily grind. He hated seeing the same people. He hated being kind of cooped up an office all day. He hated trying to come up with ways to sell products and ideas and services that he didn’t really care about that much.
Money Ain’t So Great
A lifeless, spiritless, existence. Even though he made a lot of money it didn’t seem to be nearly as rewarding. I guess when he was in college studying the idea of persuasion and marketing and sales in the abstract was very interesting, but applying it to product ideas and services that he didn’t really particularly feel any interest for wasn’t that rewarding.
He didn’t know what to do because he didn’t know if he could actually do anything else. He didn’t really think he had any kind of other set of skills. One Saturday he just went out driving around kind of aimlessly and he found this church. A kind of a small nondenominational church. It was a Saturday so he didn’t expect there to be any people inside.
He went and he sat in the back and was kind of a relaxing place, a quiet place, a place he might think about what to do with his life. He was at that point maybe 24-25 and he was just absolutely clueless as to how to handle his problem. Without any kind of warning or anything he suddenly noticed that there was a woman sitting next to him.
What Do I Do?
He felt kind of freaked out, but also very very calm at the same time. He kind of intuitively knew that this woman wasn’t really a woman. No one came in and walked in and sat down. She just suddenly appeared next to him.
She looked at him she smiled. He said that when she smiled it felt the most comforting that he ever felt in his life. She reached over and put her left hand on his right shoulder. He said it was like when you put a USB into your computer and you just transfer massive amounts of data from one device to another device.
He said it was like that. He said he felt this massive amount of like a transfer of stuff, energy, something, from her being to his being. When the data transfer was over with he felt like he had thousands of years of education programed into his brain. Thousands of years of experience programmed into his brain. Thousands of years of understanding programmed into his brain.
Infinity In A Moment
He said the only the experience itself lasted about a second or two and as soon as he felt the data transfer stop he kind of looked up at the front of the church and then he noticed there was a crucifix, a big wooden crucifix, and he just sat there and kind of gazed at the crucifix feeling very very peaceful.
At some point she left. She disappeared. She wasn’t there anymore. He doesn’t know exactly how she transitioned from being there to not being there. Whether she got up and walked out or she just poofed away, he doesn’t know. He called in sick the following Monday, and he didn’t really know what to do but he felt a very very deep sense of peace.
He started kind of clicking around online just kind of seeing where his clicks would lead him. He ended up on a site that traded stocks. He just tried to kind of goof around a little bit, read some of the tutorials and he put some of his money into it and he just, it all felt natural. He started trading. He started doing very well.
The Sea Is My Church
He described it as if he would imagine surfers feel when they go surfing. They paddle out to the ocean. They sit there in the quiet solitude and the peace of the ocean and they just wait calmly for the next set of waves to come in. When they see a set of waves coming in they pick one, they get up, they ride the waves, they get off the wave.
They paddle back out and they sit and wait. The sitting in the waiting is often the best part. Peaceful and quiet and serene. There’s no pressure. If waves come that’s fantastic, if no waves, that’s fantastic.
He says he feels that way when he trades. He logs on the morning and he just sits there peacefully waiting. When he sees a set of waves, he jumps on he rides the waves for about an hour, and then he gets off. The whole process is completely peaceful and natural and subconscious and intuitive.
Wait Peacefully – Ride Peacefully – Exit Peacefully
Each time he does that, each day he does that, he makes two or three thousand. He goes to work at the coffee shop. He is in a completely relaxed almost kind of blissed out state of mind. He very much enjoys talking to whoever wants to come in and buy coffee.
He says that’s a very rewarding exchange in that state of mind to see people come in that have money that one something and he can give them that something and they give him money. It feels like a very natural transaction compaired the job he used to have that felt like he was creating all these kind of artificial transactions.
He sort of rediscovered his love for sales and marketing but in a very kind of strange and roundabout way. Once he rediscovered his truth he was at peace and he was able to make a lot of money.
