Client Meeting Gone Bust
I went to meet a client a couple of weeks ago. My client didn’t show up. He contacted me over the Internet and we talked on Skype a few times and I wanted to make sure that he was serious because he wanted me to be a like a personal coach for him.
I want to make sure that he was serious and once I decided or once I figured he was serious I decided to meet him downtown except right when I showed up where we were supposed to meet he texted me and said he could make it.
I decided to just walk around. I had planned to talk to him for a couple of hours and so I had a couple of hours to kill since I didn’t have anything planned for a while. While I was walking around downtown I started to think about the difference between big downtown areas and small kind of neighborhood small-town areas.
Big City vs. Small Town
I guess one way to describe the difference between the two would be small-town areas have their own kind of personality because the same type of people go there the same public people shop there the same type of people do business there.
But downtown areas, since they attract a ginormous variety of people, they have more of a kind of an energy rather than a personality. The energy can change from day to day. If you’re an explorer of people that can be a great place to kind of wander around and involve yourself with a whole bunch of different people just to come and get some cool experiences.
While I was wandering around downtown I heard this preacher from a couple of blocks away. I could tell he was a preacher by the words he was saying and because he was using some kind of a PA system I assumed he had gotten some kind of a permit from the city to have a public preaching demonstration or whatever he wants to call it.
Stone Cold Genius
I got close to the guy I realized that this guy was a stone cold hustler. Now it wasn’t clear, right off the bat, if this guy was actually a preacher that was leveraging a lot of very powerful influence tactics or if this guy was just a hustler dressed up as a preacher.
When I got close I saw that he had this gigantic plexiglas donation box that was half filled with money and inside of this plexiglas donation box he had his license and his permit, taped to the front and on his license he had his website he has his tax ID number. He had all these other documentations that indicated that he was an actual real bona fide preacher from a real bona fide church.
When I saw this plexiglas box the first thing I thought of was the idea of salting a tip jar. Salting a tip jar, if you make your money by tips, you want to put your own money in the tip jar first to that kind of sends a signal of social proof.
Salt The Tip Jar
On the other hand if you have a tip jar that’s empty this can be very hard for people to be the first person to put the money in the tip jar, whereas if you put your own money in, you salt the tip jar, that will induce people to be more generous with their cash.
It seems like other people have already put money in so that will buy social proof. Get more people to put money in the tip jar. That’s what this guy looked like he was doing to this big plexiglas box a lot of cash inside. A lot of one’s, lot of five’s, a few 20s and I saw a couple of hundreds.
When I watched this guy for about 45 minutes, I realized what an actual very highly skilled stone cold hustler he was. What he was doing was exactly what the Hare Krishna’s did to get them a ton of money.
Leverage Reciprocity
What they did is they started going out in the public and begging for money and nobody give them any money. But then they started giving flowers to people first. Once they gave flowers to people first even though the people didn’t want to take the flower, once he actually got the people to take the flower in their hand that triggered the law of reciprocity.
When they first gave this person a flower, the person accepted the flower, then they asked that person for money they were much more likely to get money. Because even though they had kind of forced this flower upon them once the person accepted it, it triggered the law of reciprocity, and because of the law of reciprocity they gave the Hare Krishna’s money.
The Hare Krishna’s made so much money doing this that they got in trouble for not paying their taxes. If you’re some kind of a religion and you get in trouble for not paying your taxes that means you’re taking it a lot of money.
Social Validation First
What this street preacher was doing was the exact same thing except he wasn’t giving flowers to people he was giving people social recognition and social validation. He would pick somebody out there was walking towards him from what 20 or 30 or 40 yards away and he would combine these tools of cold reading.
He would look at this person he would use their behavior he would use the way they walked he would use where they looked when they walk to it he would come up with these very very accurate cold reading statements. He would use those cold rating statements as a reason why Jesus loved that person very much. Why Jesus wanted that person to succeed. Why Jesus knew that that person was going to be very very successful in the future.
Essentially he was combining a lot of techniques. Cold reading techniques, cause effect techniques, he was using a few patterns from the Milton Model, and so by the time the guy got to the preacher by the time the pedestrian got to the preacher he had been singled out and praised in front of all the strangers.
Money Request Later
That made him feel very good. So by the time he got to the preacher he had two choices to make. He could just ignore the preacher and keep on walking which would be incredibly difficult because now he was standing right next to the preacher all these people around him were staring at him and for him to suddenly ignore the preacher after the preacher said all these nice things to him as he walked towards the preacher doing that would be very very difficult.
The second choice would be to put some money into this big blatant plexiglas box that was already filled with money that had all kinds of tax IDs and stuff on the front so it looked very very legitimate. So because he picked people that were very wearing very very expensive clothing, by the time these people got to the preacher there was a high probability that would put in 10 or $20.
Because he carefully sorted for people that were wearing very expensive clothing because he used cold reading techniques to lure them in and give them positive validation in front of a bunch of other people that made them highly probable to give a lot of money into his plexiglas collection box.
$300 Per Hour
When I counted this, when I watched him for about 20 minutes, I was specifically trying to count how much money he was getting per hour. I calculated that he was making about $300 an hour doing this. If you could make $300 on the hour preaching on the street that’s doing pretty good.
I’m guessing his only upfront costs, if you were to do this every day in a different city or maybe a few days in the city in a few different spots, it would only cost him whatever it took to get the permit and if maybe he had a lawyer that would get the permit for him.
His really only upfront costs other than that everything else was paid for his PA system and he didn’t even actually need a physical church he just needed a website he just needed to maintain the proper documentation he probably had a lawyer that would sort out the permits for him.
Easy Six Figure Career
Once that was set up he could just show up and any city in America start preaching for three or four hours and make 1000 bucks
Whether this guy actually believed in Jesus and was just using these persuasion techniques to get more money so could promote Jesus or whether this guy was just a stone cold hustler it was impossible for me to tell.
This will probably one of the most clued in persuasive hustlers I’ve ever seen.
