There’s this nice relaxing dive bar that I go to during the week. The reason I go there as they have a pool table in the back. They have one pool table. It’s a pool table that is operated by quarters and it almost always works on a challenge system.
If there’s more than a couple people there, you have a chalkboard you write your name on and you play the winner of any of the previous game when your name comes up. During the week is a very relaxing place to go in and hang out and play a couple games of pool.
Most of the people to play there during the week are not that good and there’s this one guy that I see occasionally every couple three weeks. He’s a salesperson for this company that makes these really big industrial machines that are used in food processing.
They sell these machines to companies that take the most basic raw material foods and then process them however they need to be processed and then they sell the processed food to companies that manufacture and sell actual food to customers. This guy makes a commission of $25,000 per machine and he sells about 6 to 8 machines per year.
Each sale takes about six months and a lot of conversations with these companies. He says he likes the job very very much and he recently came back from a retirement party. A retirement party for the founder of this company.
He said the founder of his company is a very very unique individual. He’s founded a couple dozen companies over his lifetime and he’s amassed a fortune of over $1 billion but he’s somebody that no one is ever heard of. The way he founded these dozen companies as he has a unique combination of three very very rare skills.
The first skill is he has an incredibly high level of social intelligence. He can talk to somebody for just a few minutes and after talking to this person for just a few minutes he can kind of subconsciously discerned this person’s strengths and weaknesses and skills. After five or 10 minutes he has a very very good idea of what this person is really really good at doing and even if the other person hasn’t yet discovered that skill in himself. This guy has the ability to talk to people and understand what they will be good at in their life.
His second skill is he’s very very persuasive. He can talk to people and get them to do almost anything but the experience of the person that he’s persuading is they think they’re having this kind of just relaxing random conversation and during this relaxing conversation an idea will pop into their head and it will seem like a very very compelling idea.
They’ll think of this idea and they’ll think I can’t wait to do this. I can’t wait to try this out. I can’t wait to see if this works. But the idea they remember as being their idea but the way this guy guides the conversation he kind of guides the conversation so that idea will have the most likelihood of popping up in the other person’s head.
It’s a complete conscious process on this guy’s part. From his conversational partners from their perspective it’s just kind of a randomly evolving conversation that ends with this awesome idea that just pops up under their head.
The third skill is he’s extremely good at reading the economy. He’ll spend a couple of hours on the weekend reading a whole lot of financial reports and he’ll have kind of in a subconscious instinctive understanding of what kind of products would sell really well that aren’t currently being offered on the market.
When other companies start to offer products he knows ahead of time whether or not those products will do very very well. He takes these three skills any puts them together to found a company in a very very easy way. He puts a very little work on the front end but is almost always successful.
Whenever he gets an idea for a product that doesn’t exist that could make a lot of profit he looks through his list of contacts any kind of puts together the perfect team based on his awareness of their skills based on the social intelligence. He presents this meeting to them or he has a meeting and he presents an idea as a kind of investment opportunity.
He has his meeting and through his very very deep levels persuasion, they all kind of collectively come to the conclusion that they should start a new company to create that exact same product. Since he’s very very laid-back they always ask them if you wants to be a consultant and he ends up getting maybe 5% of the profits for the first five years and then 1% of the profits for the lifetime of the company.
He’s founded several companies like this and all it requires on his part is kind of a knowledge of the market his his network of people in this one initial meeting that he has and carefully persuades the group to come up with the idea on their own to create the exact product that he knows will sell really well on the market.
This guy taught the other guy how to sell that way and that’s why he loves this job so much. He drives around, he talks all these companies, he has these very relaxing, long, enjoyable conversations with them over six months and they invariably buy one of these machines and he gets a $25,000 commission for everyone that he sells.
The only drawback, he says, to this job, as he gets well into six figures it’s enjoyable conversations he has with his customers that’s nowhere even close to what you would expect a normal sales conversation to be, it’s almost like a relaxing friendly conversation, the only drawback is he’s away from home a lot and so he misses his wife and kids.
But other than that he’s got like the best job ever. Just almost like he’s just on permanent vacation visiting friends and having friendly conversations that end up buying these million-dollar pieces of equipment that gets this guy a $25,000 commission.
Idiot vs. Idiot
The good part about going to this bar during the week is you get to play a couple of games and most of the people that play during the week are usually not that good so even if you lose you think I could’ve won that one. You put your name on the board you wait for your turn and play a couple games, sit there for a couple of hours have a few nice conversations and go home.
I’ve gone there a couple times on the weekend and the guys that play pool there on the weekend are much much better than the guys that play pool there during the weekday.
The guys that go there during the weekdays are there just to come hang out and have a nice conversation, but the guys that go there on the weekend are these are these very very high level skilled pool players that look forward to some very high level competitions. Some of the games I’ve seen there on Friday and Saturday nights are just as good as any kind of game you see on TV.
Way Out Of My League
I wouldn’t even dare put my name on the board on the weekends because these guys would just destroy me because their skill is just so incredibly high.
