Party Tricks
A friend called me the other day.
She said she needed some props for a party she was having.
I asked her what kind of party she was having.
She said it was a birthday party.
For her son, who is in second grade.
No Props Up Here
I searched through my brain and didn’t find any records of any birthday party props.
She said I could still come though, as their would be cake and ice cream and a couple of clowns.
My local library has been doing some hard advertising lately.
I guess they are the verge of extinction, as the city budget is getting smaller and smaller.
Fight For Survival
So if the library doesn’t want to cease to exist, they need to attract more customers.
So they’ve been working hard to attract kids.
One way is that they’ve been having a lot of interesting characters come in on Saturday afternoons to tell stories.
One of these guys sounded very interesting, so I decided to come see what this is all about.
Don’t I Know That Guy?
I was downtown a couple of weeks ago, and I saw this guy doing tricks on the street.
He was a kind of older guy.
And he was doing some somewhat basic magic tricks.
He had a group of kids around him, kind of watching him.
But they weren’t completely transfixed with this.
So So Magician
This guy wasn’t convincing enough for the kids to give this guy your full attention.
They would watch this for a little bit, and then talk amongst themselves.
Then they would watch this for a little bit, and then talk amongst themselves.
It felt kind of bad for this street magician, and then I recognized him.
I’d know this guy from about ten years ago, I didn’t quite remember this.
Somewhere I Think
I couldn’t quite recollect where I know this guy from.
But this seemed to be a potentially troubling situation.
To have to perform magic on the street to make a living.
I suppose if you were really good, and you could do some really interesting tricks, you could make a lot of money.
I couldn’t imagine why a guy would quit a decent to become a street magician, so I was kind of worried about approaching him.
What if this guy had gone insane?
What if this guy suddenly snapped and couldn’t tell the difference between reality and hallucinations?
Once Upon a Time
There was a magician a long, long time ago.
Right around the time of the Industrial Revolution.
This guy had a very, very interesting skill.
This guy could look at you, and by reading your body language, this guy could tell what you were thinking.
This guy could see the stream of words bouncing around in your mind.
Mind Reading Rapport
Not only would this guy be able to read your mind by looking at you, this guy would slowly walk up, and slowly start speaking in perfect resonance with the stream of thoughts in your mind.
This is an old copywriting trick.
That when you approach somebody to sell them something, you need to enter the conversation already in their mind.
This is precisely what this guy did.
Merging of Brains
He would slowly approach, being able to create rapport at a distance.
So by the time this guy got close to you, you were able to feel familiar with this guy.
And when this guy started speaking, you would notice that what this guy is saying is exactly what you are thinking.
That this stream of words is matching your stream of thoughts.
Thinking Is Inside Speaking
That thinking and speaking are two sides of the same coin.
That speaking and thinking are both facets of our hallucinating mind.
That from a quantum field perspective, both of us are manifestations of the same energy field.
Which means that any ideas about separation between me and you and anybody else is really a function of our hallucinating mind.
One Energy Source
Your mind is a facet of the quantum field that we both share.
My mind is a function of the quantum field that we both share.
So one mind communication with another mind is really two waveforms that are both manifestations of the same quantum field.
This guy would approach people, and start speaking their thoughts out loud.
Familiar Feeling
But to them, this feels very familiar.
This feels very comfortable.
Soon more people would be attracted to this.
More people would be compelled to join this.
More people would want to gather around this.
Hive Mind Creation
Soon large groups of people would gather, all thinking the same thoughts.
All speaking the same words.
Finally I walked up, hoping he’d see me and do the talking and explaining why he was doing what he was doing.
He smiled and was happy to see me.
Hey Buddy!
He recognized me right away.
He didn’t exhibit any signs of embarrassment or shame.
He even offered, and then insisted, to buy me lunch.
He explained that about four years ago, he and a few other buddies at work had an idea.
VC Gold Mine
An idea they thought warranted a discussion with a venture capitalist.
Their guess was he’d give them some advice.
How to expand this idea.
How to further enhance the creativity of this idea.
But the VC was so attracted to this idea that he offered to buy this for a hundred million dollars.
They all retired multi millionaires.
Magical Hobby
And for the past six months, he’s taken up the hobby of doing magic.
Street magic.
He says performing on the street in front of strangers is extremely satisfying.
When you perform a trick and everybody is impressed, this feels very, very good.
I went to check it out to see what they guy would be like.
He told a hero’s journey type story while making balloon animals.
One Animal Per Kid
All the balloon animals represented characters from the story.
This guy seemingly made up this story off the top of his head.
And he made as many balloon animals as there were kids watching him.
So at the end of the story, all the kids could take home a balloon animal so they would remember this.
Bounce House
They had a bounce house and a lot of games.
And like she said, they also had a clown.
They clown did a lot of juggling and told some funny stories.
The kids loved him.
So did a lot of the moms.
Clowning For Whom?
This clown seemed to be performing for both the kids and the moms.
Which is an angle I’d never thought of before.
