Junior High School
When I shifted from elementary school to junior high school it was a particularly chaotic time, maybe a little bit traumatic from an emotional standpoint.
In elementary school, I could walk to school. It was about two minutes. I walked to school with my friends. I knew a bunch of people at school. I had the same classroom all day long.
I went to junior high school I went to a different school district. I had ride my bike. I had to shift into going to different classes every hour. I had to meet a whole new group of friends because when I went to this new junior high school I didn’t know anybody.
New Chess Computer
There was a recent chess computer, not really chess computer, a new computer system that they used to try out to learn to play chess or to teach this computer to play chess. Up into that point, whenever you had an idea, a desire to create a chest computer that can play chess you had a first create a very fast computer. A very powerful computer.
Then they had to program the computer with all the different potential moves in all the different potential situations. Essentially an enormous table of things to do based on what situation you are in.
This new chess computer was different. It was called Deep Learning and all they did was give this new computer the rules to chess and they said play against yourself and tell us when you’re ready.
Enter The Corporation
When I left college and went into my first job it was another kind of difficult transition. Kind of an exciting transition because I was finally making some real money but my last couple of years in college were very comfortable.
I had a lot of close friends. I had a very interesting and enjoyable lifestyle. When I shifted into working for the corporate world it was a completely new culture. I had to show up on time. There’s a lot more rules. There was a lot more expected of me.
I couldn’t hide in the back of the classroom and it took me a while to kind of get used to that situation. It was a completely different change.
Ancient Tribe
Once upon a time there was an ancient tribe of people that lived in a very large and very comfortable valley. As far as they knew, they were the only tribe that existed. They had never seen any other people from any other tribe.
They had heard stories, it had been several generations since the time existed that the stories referred to, when there are these other alleged people, but as far as they knew they were the only ones.
Then one day this strange kid, about three years old, wandered into the tribe. At first, their inclination was to kill him because he was an outsider. Then they came to their senses and thought if we killed him and it turns out he’s from a new tribe that has just moved in, that might create some horrible conflict that will last far off into the future.
Take Him In
Maybe we should be nice to this kid. Maybe once his new tribe comes to pick him up, they’ll be glad that we helped him out and we can create friends with this new tribe. But another tribe didn’t come looking for him. Nobody came looking for him. He just kind of was absorbed into the tribe.
He learned the tribe’s language. He learned the tribe’s customs. By the time he was a young adult had turned into a very skilled hunter. He was very good get going out into the jungle and killing large animals that would feed a lot of people.
He had a lot of good ideas on how to improve their agricultural yield. He had a lot of good ideas when they would sit around and talk about other things. He became a very respected member of the tribe. When he was old enough they elected him to be the chief.
Behavior Trumps Origin
They had long forgotten that he was an outsider because they had learned that all that really mattered was the stuff that he did. The ways he contributed to their society. Because he had contributed so much. Because he was so intelligent. He was very helpful and so he was a natural choice to be their chief. He led them to many years, many generations ultimately of prosperity.
After about six months I kind of started to get my bearings around this corporate structure. After about three or four years I start to become a very key player in my department. After about five years I was kind of the go-to-guy when it came to do any kind of experiments. After 10 years I was a very valuable member of the entire company.
When they finally had this new chess computer play against the old chess computer the results were amazing. It was essentially a test of two learning styles. The old learning style was tell me exactly what to do in each situation. Give me an algorithm of how to calculate exactly what to do in each situation.
Outdated Old School Method
This was very slow and very cumbersome. The new learning style was learned from experience. This new learning style, the new computer, the deep learning computer, absolutely destroyed the then best chest computer that ever existed. It did so with these moves that no one had ever seen before.
After about two or three months at this new school I started to make new friends. I started to feel more comfortable and I think this is a function of our natural human social instincts.
If you take any human and put them in any social situation our natural social instincts will make it very easy to meet new people. Your natural social instincts will make it very easy to learn new things. Your natural social instincts will make it very easy for you to feel comfortable in any situation.
