Rich Old Couple
I met this interesting couple couple of weeks ago. They’re a very older couple very very wealthy there were several hundred million dollars.
When I, before I met them, I had this kind of assumption the man was the successful business person and the wife more or less spousal support that person.
It turns out that they are very equal partners in both the relationship and in their business. I wanted to find out how this was possible because I had always heard that if you go into business with a spouse or partner it’s very very difficult to keep everything going. Because a lot of business problems might lead into the relationship and a lot of relationship problem might lead in business.
Half Cocked
They told me that when most people try to start a successful business and more people try to create a successful relationship they don’t do so with a lot of planning and forethought. They do so with only a lot of the assumptions and ideas of what they think they should be doing.
When you plan a business based on you think the market will buy rather than doing actual market research you won’t be very successful. If you start a relationship with somebody and you behave and do what you think they might appreciate without really asking them what they want to be equally unlikely to be successful.
The trick in starting a successful business is really the same as the trick in starting a successful relationship. That is to discuss everything in as much detail as you possibly can and find out exactly what both people’s expectations are. To measure as much data as you and to define each other’s roles as much as you can.
Eyes Open
They said they did this with each of their businesses and they kept out of each other’s way. They knew when they knew when asked for help in the were both very open about honestly to each other with any problems or issues they had. Always open communication because they always talked about everything and make sure the understood exactly what to do any kind of problems.
They were always able to handle those problems. Because of that they’re in their mid-50s they started and sold five or six businesses. They were worth several hundred million dollars. They’re probably the happiest couple that I’ve ever seen.
