Backpacking Trip
I’ve done a lot of backpacking. I have since I was very very young. As a kid backpacking is fun because you get to you get to get out into the wilderness and sleep in a tent or sleep under the stars, but as an adult it’s rewarding in much different way.
Mainly because you get to get away from all of the problems of modern society. It takes a couple of days. Once you are a couple of days away from the modern problems of society and start to get back to your organic natural roots, it starts to feel very therapeutic.
This is an idea that a lot of people have had without necessarily going backpacking. The idea of going somewhere that’s completely natural and sitting without any kind of technology, without your device, without worrying about your emails or your Facebook or twitter, that’s a very very therapeutic way to release a lot of stress.
Two Days Hard Walking
If you spend a couple of days, or three or four days backpacking up above a certain height that precludes most other people from going, it’s a completely different and deeper experience. The idea of walking and having to carry everything on your back for three or four days in these gorgeous environments where there are no other people and you actually see some very big wild animals is a fantastic way to kind of get back to your ancient nomadic instinctive roots.
Another benefit is you’ll meet some people that kind of have the same idea. It’s always interesting to meet people that have the same interest you do but when you meet people that have the same very deep very ancient instincts it’s a very deeply rewarding experience.
One time we were on this backpacking trip, me and a few of my friends, and we met this other group. There were three men and one woman. The woman was very quiet very small. She was built. You could tell she exercised she wasn’t big but she definitely could carry her own weight. She’d never really talked very much, except when it came time to sit around the campfire at night.
Campfire Magic
When we would sit around the campfire night, it was as if she started to channel some kind of spiritual energy. She would tell the stories around the campfire and when she told the stories she was very very charismatic very very had a strong voice tone very strong eye contact it was like she somehow morphed into a master storyteller.
During the day time she just had these very quiet very short sentences. Couldn’t really hold eye contact with anybody, but when she would tell the stories, she just completely transformed before our eyes. The stories were magnificent.
One I remember the most was about this ancient kingdom where the king had discovered the source of black magic power. He had these long-term plans based on this lack magic power. He wanted all of the people in his kingdom to be his own sons and daughters.
All Your Children Are Mine
So we set up a rule that the only women that were allowed to get pregnant had to be impregnated by him or they had to have his permission. If he found out that a woman in his realm had gotten pregnant without his permission he would dispatch soldiers to their house and kill them.
When he put this into effect there was still quite a few children in the realm. He went through and he kidnapped all of the females and kept them in this hidden fortress that no one had access to except for him and his men. His goal was to keep a hidden fortress of all the women in his realm as soon as they turned 18 he would impregnate them and they would bear all of the children of the realm.
The women would stay sequestered and would be only used to make more people. The men would be his loyal servants. Or so he thought since they would be all his sons. Then one day, after a long careful multi-year planning, several of the women stole his black magic power.
Black Magic Power Thieves
They were aware that if they started to use his black magic power they might become evil themselves. Part of the plan was to develop a spell, a magic spell based on this black magic power that would create a lasting effect but would destroy the power in the process.
These women escaped. They found a valley that no one had seen before. They set up some very basic living conditions in this valley. They set off this magic spell. What this magic spell did was it created a kind of cloak of invisibility around this valley so no one could ever find them.
It created an endless fertility in the valley so it would continue to produce food that they could use to eat and survive without needing to do any farming. It would create endless fertility among the women so they could have children without needing men and all the children would be female.
Didn’t Think It Through
Because when they set this up they were completely and viciously hateful of all the men since they had been kidnapped by a man there can be used to only make babies.
Once they set off this magic spell, the magic spell destroyed the source of the magic. At first they had a fantastic life. Everything was perfect. They had their own valley. They have their own source of food. They didn’t need men for anything. They could just relax and think and meditate and pray.
As the time went on they realized their mistake. Eventually they finally figured out that they had trapped themselves. After the initial thrill wore off, they realized they had created their own prison because the opposite side of the coin was that nobody can find them.
Protected or Trapped?
They were protected by this cloak of invisibility, but this also prevented them from ever leaving. So they were trapped with each other in this valley that nobody could ever find that was infinitely fertile and that would only have children that were females and they had to live there forever.
Whenever this woman would finish telling the stories she would quiet down and return to her normal state. The rest of us would sit around the campfire just let this story hang over our heads and try to imagine what the moral was. Imagine what it meant to imagine who this person was it was just telling the story that seem to have vanished as soon as the story ended.
Whenever these backpacking trips end I’m always of two minds. I’m kind of sad to leave the wilderness behind because it’s a very deeply rewarding experience to be in a situation to have to carry everything for four or five days. To be in this beautiful environment, no other people, but at the same time I’m always glad to get back to civilization with electricity and TV and hot running water.
One Needs To Other
It’s like you can only really enjoy one for very long before you have to get back to the other. I found that whenever I’m in society and I’m starting to be bothered by the problems of society I can start to plan my next backpacking trip.
Knowing that that backpacking trip is coming up the next year or two, just knowing it’s coming will give me a little bit of relief from the problems of modern life.
